Product Description
Tamron’s SP (superior performance) lens series was born in 1979, making this year the 40th Anniversary of the series. In celebration, Tamron has developed the model F045, The distillation of Tamron’s accumulated lens-making expertise and craftsmanship. This Orthodox fixed focal lens, which some consider the most basic of all interchangeable lenses, is the embodiment of all optical technology and manufacturing know-how Tamron has developed to date. The model f045’s unprecedented high-resolution image quality and beautiful, appealing background bokeh let photographers capture any scene down to the finest details. The external lens barrel was developed through tireless pursuit of operability and durability, focusing constantly on the needs of photographers. This lens is equipped with a large f/1. 4 aperture and high-speed, high-precision AF functionality offering exceptional reliability, plus various other features for increased convenience, making it the perfect everyday lens for your creative pursuits.
From the manufacturer
This lens completely unlocks the pleasure of photography
"We want to deliver a perfect image to people who love photography." That’s our obsessive goal for all Tamron lenses. This goal forms the basis of our concept for the SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045). The exceptional image quality of this fast fixed focal lens makes it worthy of being the lens that marks the milestone 40th anniversary of the SP (Superior Performance) Series. Uncompromising resolution at wide-open aperture combines with a velvety bokeh defocus blur that gently blends away from the ultra-sharp focus area. Ghosting and flare are suppressed to the utmost degree by the newly-developed BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating. Additionally, our new and exclusive Dynamic Rolling-cam mechanism enables the heavy F/1.4 focusing unit to move with incredible accuracy at high-speed and deliver the best AF performance in every shooting situation. Truly, the Model F045 is the distillation of all of the optical technologies and manufacturing knowhow that Tamron has developed.
Optical performance that defines the ultimate Tamron lens ever made
We endeavored to achieve ultra-high quality where every shape is captured with perfect fidelity. So we meticulously eradicated any optical aberrations that could reduce image quality. In particular, we have eliminated the on-axis chromatic aberrations that plague fast-aperture lenses, and the sagittal coma flares that reduce peripheral image quality. This is accomplished by deploying 14 elements in 10 groups, a dense arrangement for a fixed focal lens. The optical construction includes a generous arrangement of special glasses, four LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements.
Leveraging Tamron's experience creating beautiful bokeh
The SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD produces genuinely beautiful bokeh defocus blur both in front of and behind the plane of focus, a characteristic shared with Tamron's legendary 90mm F/2.8 macro lens. The major difference is the fast F/1.4 aperture. Normally, as the lens aperture opens subtle on-axis chromatic aberration appears as color fringe. So we created a countermeasure to thoroughly overcome these deficiencies and produce bokeh that blends in beautifully without introducing aberrant color in front of or behind the focal plane.
Newly developed BBAR-G2 Coating delivers stunning clarity and contrast
Tamron has long been an innovator of coating technologies that prevent ghosting and flare. Second-generation BBAR-G2 Coating is a groundbreaking advancement that provides vastly improved performance compared to the original BBAR Coating. The coating corrects for ghosting and flare to an unprecedented extent, and renders fine subject detail with true clarity and stunning contrast even under backlit conditions.
Exceptionally reliable, fast and accurate AF that unleashes creativity in every situation
The AF drive is equipped with Tamron's proprietary USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor. Additionally, Tamron's all-new Dynamic Rolling-cam mechanism operates the heavy focusing unit of the large F/1.4 aperture with high speed and accuracy. This breakthrough ensures stable AF performance and improves reliability even under the harsh shooting conditions of professional use, including high and low temperature extremes. This exceptional lens is also equipped with a Full-Time Manual Focus override system so photographers can instantly make fine adjustments to the point of focus, even in the AF mode.

Weighing 815 g, this lens feels so so good in hands, and it balances with the DSLR so beautifully. I know you will compare it with Sigma 35mm f/1.4, but I am happy to say that the fast autofocus of the 2019 Tamron lens kicks 2013 Sigma's ass..photo and video... both during daytime and in low light. I have previous experiences with Sigma Art so I am writing this with confidence. I rented the Canon 35mm L II once. Given that the Canon is a $1700 lens and only 50g (give or take) lighter, the Tamron offers far better value..... with similar image quality (feels sharper on mirrorless), weather sealing and metal construction.
I have a Canon 6D and Sony A7III. I haven't calibrated this lens for 6D yet. Image looks decent without calibration in 6D. But this lens is for the 40+ MP pro bodies! It is tempting me to buy the EOS R! I am not a fanboy of either Sony or Canon's. I love the best of both worlds. And Tamron is delivering amazing options for both worlds! When they declared they have put all of their experience into this lens, it was not an overstatement.
I adapted it on Sony A7III with the Sigma MC-11 and I must say, It focuses in my bedroom at night as fast as the Sony FE 24 mm f/1.4 GM which I own! However, with the adapter it goes around 1000g on the A7III. Also, in my completely silent bedroom, I can here the noise of the autofocus motor moving. I don't think it will affect video recording in outdoors. I will keep testing. But the quality of image I am getting is absolutely worth it.
I am writing this review as my initial impression. I will keep updating and add pictures as I try it for astrophotography, and landscapes...portraits as well.
This review is entirely my subjective opinion from two-days experience. Please take it with a grain of salt. But I expect this lens will become tremendously popular as soon as Tamron brings its mirrorless version in the market. Until then, I will keep and adapt it.
Update 1:
I adapted it with Sigma MC-11 on the Sony A7III and captured all images handheld.
1) ISO 3200, f/5, 1/50 s: 'Settling after the spinning ride'. No chromatic aberration against harsh highlights
2) ISO 200, f/4, 1/4 s: 'Waiting for the ride'. Handheld at 1/4 s! Look at the sharpness! And color rendition!
3) ISO 2500, f/1.4, 1/500 s: 'Thrill of the ride'. It tracked the baby girl at f/1.4 and got sharp image. I focused on the vest. Face is not super sharp because of thin depth of field.
4) ISO 2500, f/5, 1/20 s: 'Please dad, one more time!' Sharpness and colors again! No color fringing on the steel rails!
5) ISO 100, f/1.4, 1/30 s: 'Bokeh balls or lemons?' Bokeh becomes cat-eye shaped in the corners. But it looks buttery smooth. I focused on the harsh LED lights but again, no fringing. Amazing!
6) ISO 3200, f/1.4, 1/800 s: 'Our moments.' Again tracked at f/1.4 and got sharp results. Remember this is a DSLR lens adapted on the mirrorless and focusing in low light! Monstrous performance!
7) ISO 640, f/1.4, 1/125 s: 'Lets play this!' Sharp from f/1.4 and smooth out of focus background.
8) ISO 640, f/5, 1/8 s: Just look at the lightburst at f/5 only! How cool is that?!
9) ISO 320, f/4, 1/4 s: 'Machine In duty.' Park rides can't get any cooler than this!
10) ISO 3200, f/5, 1/20 s: Last picture to show the park and the rising moon. All under focus and super sharp.
Yes this lens weighed around 1000g with the adapter but the build is solid and I can grip it well with my L-bracket attached to the camera. And yes, I captured these images in RAW and applied basic edits.

Pros: price, excellent image quality, ability to shoot at low apertures
Cons: heavy consider wearing support strap if using for multiple hours
Update: I bumped the score up to 4/5. After micro-adjusting to -18, I was still getting a fairly high number of out of focus shots, but I could see that it was off in the opposite direction. I reviewed how I was testing it, and I believe the semi-reflective gold CF card that I was using was throwing off the focus by a small amount a percentage of the time. I tried it again with the white side of the card, and got more consistent readings and was able to dial the lens in to -11. Given that all my other lenses are exactly right without micro-adjust, I'm going to safely assume that the chinese versions of the Tamrons are not built to the same degree of precision as the Japanese ones. My Japanese Tamrons are incredible out of the box. Won't give this a 5/5 while needing such a high degree of micro-adjust.
